The education system in Belgium is known for its rigor and versatility. Higher education is based on the LMD system (Bachelor, Master, Doctorate) and is organized around two cycles :

⇒ Short cycle (transition) : Corresponding to the 1st Cycle LMD! Generally prepared in 3 years of study (180 ECTS credits) leading to a bachelor’s degree;

⇒ Long cycle (of specialization) : Corresponding to the 2nd and 3rd LMD cycle! It leads to the award of:

    • Master after successful completion of 60 ECTS credits (1 year) or 120 ECTS credits (2 years);
    • Doctorate (Phd) after successful completion of 180 ECTS credits (3 years).

It should be mentioned that higher education in Belgium is organized by:

    • Universities: a range of study choices for all tastes. Nevertheless, certain types of studies may require additional conditions for admission;
    • Les Hautes Écoles: Which differs from the university by a more professional and less theoretical education;
    • Les Écoles Supérieures des Arts (ESA): Prepare training only in the artistic field: Theater, musical training, plastic arts, performing arts, etc.;
    • Les Instituts supérieurs d’Architecture (ISA): Prepare for professions related to architecture.

Entry to Belgian higher education in the Walloon region is subject to obtaining equivalence! This certifies that your diplomas obtained outside Belgium comply with the requirements of Belgian higher education.

Obtaining a language test is not a mandatory requirement for studying in Belgium, it depends on the admission requirements required by the Belgian establishment in question.

In addition to the diversity of programs offered by the Belgian education system, there are many training courses that are provided in different languages depending on the choice you will make. Generally, the language of instruction is French in the Walloon region, English, Dutch in the Dutch-speaking region, and German in the German region.

Student visa in Belgium

To be able to stay as a foreign student in Belgium, you will need a student Visa equivalent to an Authorization for Provisional Stay (ASP) issued by the Belgian State. This student visa is compulsory for any training longer than 3 months.

To apply for a study permit in Belgium, you must:

  • Have and justify a coherent study project;
  • Hold a definitive or provisional admission to a Belgian educational institution;
  • Prove that we are able to finance your studies;
  • To be in a good health.

Please note that the requirements for obtaining a student visa in Belgium vary depending on the country of origin of the student.

The student visa in Belgium automatically grants you the right to work in parallel with your studies, and this, in any region on Belgian territory. It allows you to:

  • Work full-time and without limit of hours during school holidays.

In Belgium, a student accommodation is called a “Kot” and the student who lives there is called a “Kotteur”!

As a Moroccan or foreign student in Belgium, several student housing options are available to you!

  • Classic individual or community Kots gathered around a common area (kitchen, toilets, etc.);
  • Studios;
  • Kots in private homes;
  • Flat sharing ;
  • University or private Kots.

Of course, the price of student “kot” accommodation in Belgium depends on the location, the type and above all the period.
