With 87 universities (50 public and 37 private), Spain’s education system is similar to most European countries, and offers a wide variety of study programs! It is structured around three main national degrees:

  • First Cycle or « Grado »: generally taken over 3 years;
  • Second cycle or « Máster »: can last from one to two years;
  • Doctorado, which can last from three to five years.

NB: There is another specific type of diploma called « Título Propio » or « Diplôme Propre »! These degrees are offered by certain Spanish universities outside the official higher education system, and are generally focused on specialized fields !

As an international student, in order to study in Spain, you must :

  • Pass the « Selectividad » entrance test organized by the same organization.

On the other hand, selection is by field of study! To be admitted, students must achieve the minimum grade (nota de corte) required to enter the chosen course. This grade varies from year to year, and depends on each stream.

Common eligibility requirements :

  • Proof of minimum Spanish level: DELE diploma (Diploma de español como lengua extranjera) ;
  • Sufficient financial means for the entire duration of studies in Spain;
  • Secure a place at a university or college.

Generally speaking, the cost of studying at a public university is very affordable! They can vary from 500€ to 2000€. Private universities, on the other hand, can cost from €5,000 to €13,000, or even more for a full year of study.
