Turkey's Education system
The education system in Turkey is known for its quality and versatility. It is administered by the higher education council “Yükseköğretim Kurulu (YOK)”. It offer :
- Professional Higher Institutions “Meslek Yuksek Okullari in Turkish language”
- Public universities “Devlet Universiteleri”
- Private universities.
Higher education is modeled on the LMD system (Licence, Master, Doctorat) which means should be achieved by ECTS credits! They are organized around three cycles and mainly deliver these diplomas :
⇒ First Cycle : with two possibilities:
- “Lisans” or “Bechelor’s degree” course prepared in 4 years;
- Additional course, a « Specialized bachelor’s degree » which is none other than the specialized license prepared in 6 years of study.
⇒ Second Cycle : With two possibilities:
- The Master with end-of-study dissertation “Tezli Yüksek Lisans” prepared in 2 years of study ;
- The Master without end-of-studies dissertation “Tezsiz Yüksek Lisans” prepared in 1 year and a half of study.
⇒ Third cycle : lasts four years and corresponds to doctoral training and ends with obtaining the “PhD” or “Doktora” grade.
Note that medical studies last only 6 years and those of veterinary medicine, pharmacy, odontology and architecture last for 5 years.
Language of instruction in Turkey
As an international student in Turkey, you are spoiled for choice in terms of language of instruction (Turkish, English, German, and French). This is part of a national desire to make Turkish higher education and scientific research more open to the world.
- If you choose the Turkish language, you must pass the “Turkish Language Proficiency” test. On the other hand, for courses taught in English, German and French, language tests will be required.
Admission sessions
Turkish universities generally offer two main sessions :
- Fall session: the main admission and spans the period from September to February ;
- Spring session: Spread over the period from February to June.
Some universities offer an additional “optional” session in July/August!
NB : Please note that it is always advisable to start your procedures within 6 months of the desired session.
