Choose your program

In the United States, the possibilities are endless ! Discover the possibilities available to international students.

The American education system is very unique. It is completely decentralized!

Higher education institutions are very autonomous both in the design and definition of programs and in the level of recruitment of their teaching staff and students. The admissions process differs from one institution to another.

The studies are organized around 3 cycles:

Vocational school (or Technical Schools): These are specialized professional training courses, generally short, prepared in two years. The only particularity of these diplomas is that they do not allow you to enter the university at the Undergraduate level.

Undergraduate: Leading to a Bachelor of Science/Arts degree (prepared in 3 years = bac+3) or a Bachelor of Honor degree (prepared in 4 years = bac+4);

Graduate studies: Lead to a diploma of:

    • Master of Science/arts, MBA (equivalent to a Master 2 or Bac+5);
    • Doctorate (Phd) prepared in 3 years after a Master’s degree.
  • English tests

To be able to study in the United States (USA) and integrate an American university, as a non-English speaking international student, you will be required to justify your level of English. In general, two main tests are required:

TOEFL (Test of English As A Foreign Language);

IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

Given the high demand for language certifications, it is highly recommended that you register for them about two months in advance.

  • Aptitude test

In order to assess the abilities and skills necessary to follow their programs, American universities require admission tests!

Undergraduate level aptitude tests

→ SAT or “Scholastic Assessment Test”

One of the most famous tests in the USA! It assesses the candidate’s skills in English, in reading and interpreting text and in mathematics.

→ ACT or “American College Testing”

An alternative to the SAT exam! It features the same SAT (English, Reading and Math) assessments plus a new section which is “Science”.

Graduate level aptitude tests

→ GRE or “Graduate Record Examination”

If you are targeting business schools or another institution offering graduate and postgraduate programs, you will definitely be required to take this test.

→ GMAT or “Graduate Management Admission Test”

Test generally required to join a program (MBA type) in the field of management and administration in particular.

American educational institutions generally offer three admission sessions:

  • Fall session : Constitutes the main admission! It begins in August/September;
  • Spring session : Starts in January/February;
  • Summer session : Available for certain courses and usually starts in May/June.

Since the deadlines for submitting applications are generally a few months before the start date of the session. It is always advisable to start preparing your file in the 10 to 12 months preceding the desired session.

To study full-time in the USA, you will need a student visa. This student visa in the United States is generally valid for the duration of the program followed !

Before applying for your student visa for the United States, you must determine the type of visa you will need!

In general, the type of program you are aiming for determines the type of visa to apply for! There are two common types:

  • F-1 visa (non-immigrant student visa)

This type of student visa is intended for non-immigrant international students wishing to enter a higher education or language program, which takes place over more than 18 hours per week, within an approved educational institution.

  • M-1 visa (non-immigrant student visa)

This visa is intended for non-immigrant international students wishing to opt for non-academic studies in vocational schools and practical training (cooking, hospitality, electricity, plumbing, carpentry, etc.) or to do an internship in an institution in the USA.

Before you can apply for your student visa for the United States, you must:

  • Be accepted into an educational institution in the United States;
  • Form I-20 provided by the establishment to which you are assigned;
  • Justify sufficient resources to finance your studies AND also your living expenses for the first 12 months.

The student, non-immigrant and educational visa will allow you to:

When it comes to looking for student accommodation in the United States, there are many solutions depending on the criteria of each! It boils down to two broad categories :

  • On-Campus (university residences and private university residences)

Also called “Dorms” or “student dormitories”! Very economical since they are often shared by several students! They have everything you need and are usually near university campuses.

They remain by far the most preferred solution for international students as well as for Americans. Except that with more than a million international students, in addition to American students, you will certainly not be the only ones looking for student accommodation in the United States.

  • Off-Campus (House-Sharing, Studio, Apartment, Subletting, etc.)

They are represented within the universities by an office (Off-campus housing office).

Very often far from campus and expensive compared to on-campus accommodation! Except that they have a very complete list of useful amenities and provide much more comfort and privacy.

Of course, the price of student housing in the United States depends on the location, the type and especially the period.
